The short answer is 83 to 89 minutes, but block two and a half hours
The TOEFL iBT you sit in 2026 takes between 1 hour 23 minutes and 1 hour 29 minutes of actual testing, according to the ETS blueprint for the redesigned test1. The range exists because Reading and Listening are adaptive, and the module you are routed into after the first stage is a few minutes longer or shorter than the alternative1. ETS rounds this up on its test content page and tells you to "allow approximately two hours to complete the test," which covers directions, transitions between sections and the tutorial screens2.
The number that decides your morning is bigger than either of those. At a test center you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your test time for check-in3, and there is no scheduled break once the test starts4. So the honest answer to "how long is the TOEFL" is about two and a half hours door to door, of which roughly ninety minutes are spent answering questions.
TOEFL 2026 timing by section
The official section times and item counts, from the ETS test content page and the 2026 blueprint21:
| Section | Time | Items | Adaptive? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 27 to 30 minutes | 50 | Yes, two stages |
| Listening | 25 to 29 minutes | 47 | Yes, two stages |
| Writing | 23 minutes | 12 | No |
| Speaking | 8 minutes | 11 | No |
| Total | 83 to 89 minutes | 120 |
The sections always run in that order: Reading, then Listening, then Writing, with Speaking last5. The blueprint counts 120 items in total, and some of the Reading and Listening items are unscored trial questions that ETS uses to test future material, so do not assume every item you see counts1.
Reading: 27 to 30 minutes
Reading opens with a router stage that the blueprint budgets at 18 to 21 minutes, followed by a second module of about 9 minutes1. Everyone gets the same router; how accurately you handle it decides whether the second module is the harder academic-leaning version or the easier daily-life one5. The 50 items split across three task types: 30 Complete the Words items, 5 to 15 Read in Daily Life questions, and 5 to 15 questions on academic passages1. There is no per-passage clock, so the pacing is yours to manage inside the section timer.
Listening: 25 to 29 minutes
Listening runs an 18-minute router, then a lower module of about 7 minutes or an upper module of about 11 minutes1. That 4-minute swing is most of the difference between the shortest and longest possible test, and it works in your favor: the longer module is the harder one, and only the harder one reaches the top bands. The 47 items come from four task types, roughly 15 to 19 Listen and Choose a Response items, 10 conversation questions, 6 to 10 announcement questions, and 8 to 16 academic talk questions1. Every clip plays once and there is no replay6.
Writing: 23 minutes, three separate clocks
Writing is fixed at 23 minutes for 12 items2. Inside that, each task has its own timer and unused time does not carry over7. You get about six minutes for the run of ten Build a Sentence items, seven minutes for the Email, and ten minutes for the Academic Discussion post7. The Email and Discussion clocks are the ones people run out of, so if you are going to bank time anywhere it has to be on Build a Sentence.
Speaking: 8 minutes, most of it listening
Speaking is 8 minutes for 11 items, none of them with preparation time28. Seven Listen and Repeat sentences give you 8 seconds to respond on the first two, 10 on the next three, and 12 on the last two8. The four Interview questions allow 45 seconds each8. Add those up and you speak for under four minutes in total; the rest of the section is audio, on-screen setup and the pauses between items.
Time per task at a glance
If you are building a practice schedule, these are the per-item numbers to rehearse against187:
| Task | Items | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Complete the Words | 30 blanks across several paragraphs | Shared Reading timer |
| Read in Daily Life | 5 to 15 questions | Shared Reading timer |
| Read an Academic Passage | 5 to 15 questions | Shared Reading timer |
| Listen and Choose a Response | 15 to 19 | Audio-paced |
| Listen to a Conversation | 10 | Audio-paced |
| Listen to an Announcement | 6 to 10 | Audio-paced |
| Listen to an Academic Talk | 8 to 16 | Audio-paced |
| Build a Sentence | 10 | About 6 minutes total |
| Write an Email | 1 | 7 minutes |
| Academic Discussion | 1 | 10 minutes |
| Listen and Repeat | 7 | 8, 10 or 12 seconds each |
| Interview | 4 | 45 seconds each |
How much shorter the test got
Older prep material describes a very different day. Until July 2023 the TOEFL iBT took about three hours9. ETS cut it to under two hours from July 26, 2023 by trimming the Reading section, dropping unscored questions and replacing the independent essay9; that version ran about 116 minutes5. The January 2026 redesign then removed the integrated tasks and the long passages and brought testing time down to 83 to 89 minutes51. If a book or video quotes a three-hour test with a ten-minute break, it is describing an exam that has not existed for three years.
Test center versus Home Edition timing
The test is the same length either way. What differs is the time around it.
At a test center, plan for the 30-minute early arrival ETS requires3, plus roughly 15 to 20 minutes of ID checks, photo and security screening that tutors report before you sit down10. From there it is about two hours to the end of Speaking2.
For the Home Edition, ETS runs a proctor check-in that covers your ID, a scan of the room and a check of your equipment, and the test timer does not start until that is complete11. Once it starts, no breaks are allowed unless one was approved as an accommodation12. Budget the same two and a half hours you would for a center, be seated and checked in ahead of the appointment time rather than at it, and use the bathroom before you launch the check-in, because the next opportunity is after Speaking.
Accommodations that change the clock
Approved disability accommodations can add extended testing time or extra rest breaks13. Extended time comes in 25 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent versions, which stretch the test to roughly 1 hour 53 minutes, 2 hours 15 minutes and 3 hours respectively14. Requests are reviewed on documentation and the review takes about six weeks, longer if ETS asks for more paperwork, so this is not something to arrange the week before13.
What the timing means for how you prepare
Ninety minutes with no break sounds easy next to the old three-hour test, and that is the trap. The redesigned exam packs 120 items into that window and switches style every few minutes, from an academic paragraph to a campus notice to a two-person conversation to a forum post. Fatigue on this test comes from switching, not from length, and the section that suffers is the one at the end: you reach Speaking having said nothing for well over an hour5.
So practice the whole sequence, not just the sections. Once a week, run a full-length TOEFL 2026 mock test at the official section timing, in one sitting, with no pauses and headphones on, and check how your Speaking bands compare with the ones you get when you drill Speaking fresh. If they are lower under fatigue, that gap is the thing to train, and the fix is more full runs rather than more Speaking drills. On the other days, the practice hub lets you work on single tasks against their real per-item clocks, which is where the Writing section is won: get the ten Build a Sentence items under 30 seconds each and the Email and Discussion timers stop feeling tight.
For the full breakdown of what each of the twelve tasks asks of you, read the TOEFL 2026 format guide, and for converting your target score into a band per section, the TOEFL 2026 score conversion guide. Then put a full mock on the calendar for this week and time it door to door, check-in included.
